[Video] Perceptual Positions

Perceptual Positions is the idea of being able to see something from somebody else's point of view or, indeed, from a completely different point of view. If you work in a service industry, you probably will have had it drummed into you that it's important to be able to see things from your customer's point of view. In lots of other environments as well, we are encouraged to take somebody else's perspective.

The thing is, it's not that easy to do it really well...

Really interesting post, thanks Dianne. I ran a brief exercise in creating more empathy at a workshop last week. Using a series of prompt questions, I asked everyone to respond as if they were a chosen different person. Writing it down can have even more of an impact. I'd not thought of the third perceptual position though and taking an even more dispassionate stance as a pure observer. When working through this I also found I was able to observe my own approach and how that may have been perceived as well.
